The GR 221 runs through the Serra de Tramuntana from Port d’Andratx to Pollença — roughly 135 kilometres of mountain trail, stone refuges and some of the best walking in the Mediterranean.
You don’t have to walk the whole thing. Many people pick sections. Some of the strongest stretches:
Esporles to Valldemossa. About 10 km through oak forest, over the Coll de Sa Bassola, with views across to the coast. Not too demanding and the arrival in Valldemossa rewards you with coffee and coca de patata.
Valldemossa to Deià. Shorter but with a steep climb out of the valley. The descent into Deià through olive terraces is beautiful. Allow three to four hours.
Tossals Verds to Lluc. A longer stretch through the high interior — more remote, less trafficked. The Tossals Verds refuge is a good overnight stop if you can get a bed.
Lluc to Pollença. The final stretch. Rocky, exposed in places, but with long views north. Finishes with a gradual descent into the Pollença plain.
The route is waymarked but can be inconsistent — some sections have been rerouted around private land. Carry a GPS track as backup. Spring and autumn are the best seasons; summer is too hot for the exposed sections.
Has anyone walked it recently? Any sections you’d particularly recommend — or avoid?
