Mahón mussels – worth the trip to Menorca?

View Mallorca just featured an article about Mahón mussels and the rope cultivation technique in Menorca. The rope-to-plate story is fascinating – completely sustainable harvesting from the Mediterranean.

It’s tagged under their “Off the Island” series which I love – expanding the lens beyond just Mallorca. Has anyone done a food-focused day trip to Menorca specifically for the seafood? The fast ferry makes it doable as a long day trip from Palma or Alcúdia.

Also curious: where’s the best place to get Mahón mussels here in Mallorca without going to Menorca?

The Baleària fast ferry from Alcúdia to Ciutadella makes Menorca incredibly accessible – about 1.5 hours each way. I did a food trip there in spring and the mussels in the port of Maó were some of the best seafood I’ve had.

In Mallorca, the fish market at Mercat de l’Olivar in Palma often has Menorcan mussels. For a restaurant, try any of the chiringuitos in Portocolom or Porto Cristo – they usually source from Menorca.

The article about the rope technique is great. It’s such a sustainable method and the flavour is noticeably different from farmed Atlantic mussels.

Great topic! The “Off the Island” series from View Mallorca is a nice touch – recognising that the Balearics are a connected archipelago, not just Mallorca on its own.

For Mahón mussels in Palma, the restaurant Ca’n Eduardo by the fish market does them beautifully – steamed with local herbs. Simple but perfect.
